Mayan Spinners and Handspun Yarn from Ottawa!

While Nikki was vacationing with her family in Ottawa she took the fibre-love with her and hooked her sister and lovely nieces on the Mayan Spinning awesomeness and the amazing feeling of making your own yarn!!

They LOVED it! (As we all do once we are bit by the "fibre-bug!") Above is some of the hand-dyed Canadian Merino Wool that was the fruit of their happy labours!

So thrilled to have inducted more enthusiasts into the flock! :)

Roving to Yarn ...

An update to my previous post on how far 1 oz of roving will go ... on the Mayan Spinner I got 60 yards!! Not bad. This is how she looked after I set the twist and fulled the yarn a bit so that it really brought out the handspun look :)

I spun a yarn that ended up being about 14 wraps per inch in size and have now started knitting it up on 3.25 mm (or No. 3 US) DPN's to begin the owl - see below for the beginning of the owl's bottom (teehee)

I have had some inquiries about purchasing my owl pattern, and so right now I am in the process of writing my pattern down rather than free-form knitting it as I have been doing for my owls and changing them as I go along.
If you are interested and would like us to email you the notification when it is ready for sale in our upcoming Etsy shop, please pop us an email at nickelbeestudios@gmail.com.

Happy Spinning & Knitting Everyone!

How far will 1 oz of roving go?

So, I was wondering, because we were selling 1 ounce bags of roving at Creative Chaos - how far will 1 oz of roving go?
Of course, it depends on how thick, or conversely, how thin you spin it - but as a general rule of thumb, for knitting up my owls I thought I would put it to the test.
So, starting as a demonstration on the Mayan Spinner at the show I began with these wonderful colours that Nikki Marshall dyed up that I absolutley could not resist!

... and then, on my coffee breaks, I've done a little more each day ...

So I still have a little ways to go but I will keep you posted on how many yards that I get before the knitting begins!
